Fragrance Friday: Starring…! Fragrances Diva & Beauty

Fragrance Friday Starring FragrancesThe market for organic products is huge and only growing, and the trend isn’t limited to makeup and skincare. Starring…! Fragrances was kind enough to let me sample their line of all-natural perfumes. Created by actresses and sisters Ashley and Courtney Peldon, the line features elegant fragrances in gold-capped bottles and complements any eco-conscious babe who doesn’t want to smell like patchouli. I tried two very different scents: The Diva and The Beauty.

The Diva is heady and instantly sexy, definitely created with evening in mind. Its decadent combination of chocolate and strawberry made me instantly hungry- it smells a lot like a cherry cordial. It’s perfect for a night at the club or an encounter a few dates in – and with these organic formulas you don’t have to worry about your man kissing your neck and tasting peroxide. If you wish you were Madonna, love dark purple, and consider yourself high-maintenance, this is your signature scent.  Continue reading “Fragrance Friday: Starring…! Fragrances Diva & Beauty”

Makeup Review: Clinique Glow Crazy Powder Highlighter

Makeup Review Clinique Glow Crazy Powder Highlighter Brandied Bronze ModelClinique’s appeal has always been heightened by their famous Gifts With Purchase. Who can resist? All you’ve gotta do is buy what you came for, and voila! You come out the other side with a whole new batch of products to try, which as you may have guessed, is one of the Dove’s weaknesses. All my makeup early in life came from my grandmother’s Clinique-gift-with-purchase hand-me downs.

I ended up with the brand’s Glow Crazy Powder Highlighter via one of these surprise packages, and I’m confident it was fate. I landed #07 Platinum Glow, which is a delectably shimmery white color, and craving more, I sampled both Blooming Pink and Gold Dust and was equally impressed, but the white’s definitely the most versatile. That’s the great thing about these powders – they’re loose, shimmery and intense.

For all it offers, this highlighter has one big letdown: the container has an odd small round hole in the top, making it difficult to get a good amount of powder on any applicator. It’s impossible to get nearly any of the stuff on a sizable tool like a blush brush or powder puff, and if you dip a small eyeshadow brush in the opening, a giant clump of powder bursts out on the bristles. It’s worth it for a beautiful shadow though!

Beauty, Defined: Ferrule

Beauty Defined Ferrule BeneFit slant powder brushWelcome to Beauty, Defined – a new series where we talk about the meaning and origin of various beauty terms. Check out our inaugural term: do you know what a ferrule is?

fer·rule (feh-rool) n. The usually metal-plated part of a makeup or cosmetics brush directly below the bristles that secures the hair bundle and attaches to the brush’s handle. Though the word is derived from the Latin word for “iron”, popular makeup brand M·A·C Cosmetics’ ferrules are nickel-plated.

Over to the right, you can see a ferrule in action on a BeneFit Slant Powder Brush. Aren’t you glad you know what that’s called now?

Face Makeup Review Chanel Teint Innocence Foundation Feature

Face Makeup Review: Chanel Teint Innocence Foundation

Face Makeup Review Chanel Teint Innocence FoundationIt’s an amazing triumph when I, in all my persistent frugality, can cross a department-store makeup item off my wishlist. This weekend’s procurement was no exception. I’ve lusted after Chanel Teint Innocence for months after reading some “Go natural but still look hot!”-type rave in Allure that mentioned it as the end-all, be-all in youthful foundation. Since then, I’ve yearned away with no real reason not to buy it other than how cheap I am. Perhaps I was trying to build excitement?

Well, it turns out there was no need. Teint Innocence amazed me from the top down. The box is luxe, shiny black with a gold band around the bottom; the jar inside’s top is matte black with Chanel’s signature intertwined Cs on top, and it has an ingenious way of locking securely onto the top of the bottle much like the gas cap on my Honda Civic. Even the opening is smart, advising moderation by allowing only a small amount of product to escape at once. Did I mention there’s Chanel foundation inside?

How-To: Get Soft, Pretty Feet!

How-To Get Soft, Pretty Feet FlowersAre you sick of your rough, callused feet? Of course you are! It’s no secret women want every (and I mean every) part of their bodies to be soft and pretty. Unfortunately, your feet are literally at the bottom of the barrel, and most of us ignore them until they feel like sandpaper. Fear not, my fellow foul-footed females – the Dove is ditching the makeup for a day and teaching you how to make your tootsies trendy & touchable – no pedicure required! Read on and get a foot fetish! …er… you know what I mean.

Step 1: Slough What’s Rough

Grab some Epsom salt at the drugstore and toss a couple spoonfuls of it in a warm bath. Dip those haggard feet in there and soak, soak, soak. As soon as your feet feel comfortable in the water, grab an exfoliating salt scrub like Arbonne Awaken Sea Salt Scrub and scrub the bottoms of your feet like a madwoman. (I suggest salt-based, but sugar is also an option; the usual benefit to using sugar instead of salt, however, is that it’s less likely to irritate and inflame skin. Since the skin on the bottom of my feet is pretty comparable to the exterior of an armored car, gentle handling really isn’t necessary.) Rub the entire foot – this means the bottom, top, ankles, ball, heel, big toe and bottom again – vigorously until your foot closely resembles a steak tartare. No pain, no gain, baby!
