How To Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Tell me how to take care of my new makeup brush. Do I wash it and how often?

There are a billion fancy brush cleaners you can buy – but on the flip side, you could do the bare inexpensive minimum and simply spritz the brushes with isopropyl alcohol to decontaminate. However, that might not add a lot of life to that Real Techniques blender you blew your pretty little allowance on.

I do the gentle, happy medium. Just use a tiny drop of dish soap and water. I like to put it in a bowl and put all the brushes in once every week or two and just let them soak. They air-dry nicely here in the desert, but you might want to paper-towel-shape them dry in the humidity.

(Admittedly, I wasn’t always so low-maintenance on the brush cleansing front – I used to love one by Garden Botanika, but it seems they’ve taken it off the market. Sniffle.)

  • Hello! i found this link on Facebook - Thanks for sharing this.. I never knew what is the right type of soap for makeup brushes and was always afraid to mess my nice expensive ones up with the wrong things. Thank you again

  • I buy makeup brush cleaners because I use to use baby soap and it didn't leave my brushes soft anymore. I also purchased new soaps from a small shop on etsy that has been all over on IG. So I can't wait to test that out.

  • At least you clean yours... I'm awful. So bad, I know, but I avoid cleaning them at all costs because it's just no fun at all. I just buy more brushes and add them to the collection bahhaha

  • Love this! I used to do free-lance for a company here in Utah. I had a few clients who had used brushes for years without cleaning! So important. Thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you so much for sharing. I am the worst when it comes to cleaning my brushes but I NEED to be better about it. Thanks!

  • So easy! I'm guilty of not cleaning mine nearly as often as I need to, but now I have no excuse with how easy it is!

  • Isopropyl alcohol is a great disinfectant! I am so glad I have found your article. I was always afraid to try to wash them without alcohol. Now I will give your method a try. Best regards!
