Smoky eyes are a big hit right now, and everyone wants to know how to get the sexy effect without looking like you slept in your makeup. Enter this limited edition product from Revlon, one of my drugstore purchases this weekend. (See how much money I spend on helping you guys out? I’m so awesome.) All I could think about the whole time was: “You’re thinkin’ up your white lies, and puttin’ on your bedroom eyes”…ah, REO Speedwagon. You touch my life in so many ways.
I often ignore the directions, but the packaging gave a helpful tip: “Tap applicator to remove excess.” Why do I never listen?
I use eyeliner nearly every day I put on makeup, and it’s also one of the products I get the most questions about because it’s hard to apply perfectly. Pencil liner smudges and moves, while liquid requires an experienced hand and can look overdone. So when I saw L’Oreal’s Mistake-Proof Marker eyeliner, I had to try it. Who could resist an allegedly easy solution to our multitude of lining problems? After all, the package claims the flow is “controlled and continuous so you can easily follow the contour of the eye without skipping – no need to dip in the bottle”, and that it won’t smudge.
I’m a liquid eyeliner addict, so I’ve pretty much tried everything. This is one that can always be found in my makeup drawer, but I won’t say it’s the best. Maybelline Ultra-Liner is a liquid eyeliner that has one amazing feature – it is pretty insanely waterproof. I mean really. Jump in the pool, take a shower, it’s not going anywhere.
Ultra Liner has a thick brush tip that’s a little hard to manage if you’re new to liquid liner, but easy and quick to slide on once you know what you’re doing. It’s hard to get a thin, sleek line with it, so I’d only use it on my upper lid (unless you’re going for a gothy look or want insanely smoky eyes for a night on the town).
The finish is like a plastic shell of liner, which is great for being waterproof and doesn’t smudge at all, but bad for a couple of reasons: since the normal method of lining your eyes is to pull your lid straight, it can crinkle and crack at the sides; also, the finish is kind of shiny and can kill the ultra-black effect, especially in photos.
