How Plastic Surgery Trends Shift and Change Over Time

As the years progress, so do the beauty standards and ideals of society. As beauty ideals continue to shift, change and evolve, we find that plastic surgery trends also follow suit. Procedures that were once incredibly popular have now fallen behind what is sought after in 2020 and vice versa. In today’s article, we have a look at how plastic surgery trends shift and change over time, so read on to find out more.

  1. The Rise of Rhinoplasty

Back in the 1980s and 1990s, rhinoplasty, also more commonly known as a nose job, was a procedure that was saved for the rich and famous. Most would immediately think of megastars such as Michael Jackson, Cher and Joan Rivers whenever the topic of rhinoplasty was brought up. However, fast forward to 2020 and rhinoplasty has become one of the most common procedures in plastic surgery clinics all over the world. With the continued proliferation of celebrity influences that include names such as Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner and various social media influencers who are in the spotlight today, more and more people are moving towards a pro-plastic surgery way of life.

  1.   Bigger Isn’t Always Better

When it comes to breast augmentation, we can truly see how plastic surgery trends shift and change over time. 20 to 30 years ago, the likes of celebrities such as Pamela Anderson made large breast implants a trend. Women were seeking out figures that looked like their favourite celebrities – large breasts and a tiny waist. In 2020, this trend for over the top breast augmentation seems to have died down significantly, with more and more people aiming for a more natural look when it comes to breast augmentation.

  1.    The Age of The “Belfie”

In the early 2000s, beauty was defined as having a waif-like body with no curves. Just think about celebrities such as Kate Moss, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie who were deemed to have the perfect bodies at the time. All that has since changed, and we now live in the age of the “belfie”. The “belfie”, a slang for “butt selfie”, is the rising trend of women looking to achieve larger and curvier buttocks and posting images of them on social media. With the rise of the “belfie” also comes the rise of procedures such as butt implants becoming more and more popular amongst women. Instead of aiming for a stick-thin body, women are now looking to enhance and accentuate their curves as much as possible.

  1.    The Perfect Pout

As early as the year 2016, more and more women were heading to cosmetic surgeons to get lip fillers and injectables. This was highly influenced by social media mogul Kylie Jenner who decided to get her lips filled a few years ago. Plumping your pout is now considered almost as mainstream as whitening your teeth or waxing your eyebrows. In fact, some may say we are living in the age of the “lip job”. A procedure that wasn’t that popular 20 years ago is now front and centre of the plastic surgery industry, with girls as young as 16 years old getting their lips plumped in the name of beauty

  1.    Liposuction Has Never Been Easier

Again, procedures such as liposuction were once considered only for the rich and elite. Who had the money or the downtime to get liposuction? Most of us didn’t until liposculpture procedures evolved to become as minimally invasive as they are today. More and more people are going for “lunchtime lipo” or other similar procedures that can see an individual in and out of a clinic in under a few hours. With the rising trend of a small waist and big bottom, more and more people are undergoing such procedures with the aim of achieving the ultimate hourglass figure that is so sought after in 2020.

Plastic surgery trends have evolved incredible amounts since its inception, and we are almost certain that they will continue to evolve as our beauty standards change over time. We hope that this article has given you some insight into the ever-changing cosmetic surgery trends.
