Tips In DIY Hair Dyeing

Do you always have boring hairstyle? Are you trying to mix things up? You might have thought about it and finally wanted to try something new. You want fun and funky hair. You want to color your hair with the trending hairstyle. Unfortunately, you don’t know how to do it. Meanwhile, going to the salon is expensive. So, what are you going to do? Luckily, you can try the tips provided below:

Prepare the Materials

Before anything else, make sure that you prepare the materials needed for balayage hair colouring. First, prepare the chemicals. Get ready the hair bleach kit, a semi-permanent hair color, shampoo, and conditioner. For the tools, you have to prepare the brush or comb, two rubber bands, gloves, bowl, aluminum foil, towel, hair cape, timer, and blow dryer.

Moisturize your Hair

The dye will work best to hydrated and healthy hair. As such, conditioning treatments must be part of your regular regimen at balayage hair colouring. You can try using the ultimate moisture protein complete mask for your hair at least once a week.

Ask your Colorist for Color Levels

If you are planning to color your hair, it will be best to ask first your colorist regarding the hair color that they recommend. Indeed, this is important information for DIYers. This will guide you of the proper color of your hair.

As such, make sure to set realistic expectations. While you are in the process of dyeing your hair, make sure to ignore those misleading information outside the box. Make sure to limit your at-home dyeing to two shades darker. You can also limit it to a shade lighter than your natural hair color.

Remember, shades that are labeled as golden or warm will often end up looking orange. As such, opt for neutral or cool colors just to be safe. This is true if your shade skews red at all.

Decide if you want a Semi-Permanent or Permanent Hair Dye

There are three main types of hair dye. Semi-permanent, demi-permanent, and permanent. All of these have their lifespans.

Semi-permanent hair dyes will last 15 washes maximum. In this type of dye, there are no chemicals used such as developer and hydrogen peroxide. The color will just sit on the hair’s surface. If the fine print of the box will tell you to mix anything at all, the dye is not semi-permanent. It will last closer to 28 washes.

Meanwhile, demi-permanent hair dyes will blend a new color with the natural color of your hair. However, it will not do anything major such as cover the grays. Indeed, semi-permanent dyes are great for people who want to amp their existing colors. This is making chestnut-brown hair shinier and richer for three to four weeks. This is done without the noticeable roots during a grow-out phase.

Finally, permanent hair dyes are filled with ammonia. If it is combined with hydrogen peroxide, it will penetrate deep into your hair. The result will be long-lasting hair color that will only fade slightly over time. Then, you will have to retouch it every four to six weeks as the roots begin to grow.

  • I loved how you mentioned that dye works best when you use it on hydrated and healthy hair. My wife is wanting to switch up her style and she was wondering how she could dye her hair blue and make it look good. I'll be sure to tell her to moisturize her hair before dying it blue.
