There are a set of duties you are expected to perform and responsibilities you need to fulfill as a bridesmaid. Here is a list of things that will be expected of you and you should keep these in mind if you are a first time bridesmaid or you want to know what being a bridesmaid is all about.
Lend your bride friend your ear and shoulders each time she needs someone to be there to hear her problems or have an emotional rant with. Weddings are a very emotional time for the bride and her family, so you should be there to lend her a helping hand and a shoulder each time she feels down or low. The bride to be will have a lot of dress rehearsals that you will need to accompany her to and give your honest opinion on. Your friend will expect you to be completely honest and straightforward with her about the wedding dress, so don’t hold back your thoughts when it comes to the bride choosing her wedding dress.
After the wedding dress rehearsals, will come the bridesmaid dress rehearsals. You should be present for all bridesmaid dress fittings and rehearsals as well, because it’ll be you this time who will don the dress. Make sure that you help the bride choose the bridesmaid dresses and give your feedback on the choices shortlisted. Also, help the bride pick out the accessories and shoes to go with the dresses.
It becomes the responsibility of the maid of honour and the bridesmaids to throw the bride-to-be, a fantastic hen do or bridal shower. All the bridesmaids will need to get together and brainstorm hen do ideas. You must ensure that you keep the interests, likes and dislikes of the bride in mind while planning a hen do for her. You will have to come up with an invite list for the hen night, choose a date for the hen do, then plan all activities, make the bookings and arrangements. You will have to divide the expenditure of the hen night amongst all the invited friends of the bride, because a hen do is always hosted by the bride’s friends for her.
On the main day of the wedding, a bridesmaid should ensure that the bride gets ready on time, has everything she needs to get ready for the wedding ceremony. She should also ensure that the flower girls and boys are in their place, on time and ready. You may also welcome the guests and walk them to their seats at the venue. More or less you are responsible for anyone who might need your help or any last minute errands. You will also ensure that the bride’s dress is in place right before she gets ready to walk down the aisle. Either you or the maid of honour will be responsible for holding the wedding bands and the bride’s bouquet during the ceremony.
You will also have to present the newly wedded couple with a memorable wedding gift, so make sure that you’re ready with that to place on the gift pile after the wedding.
Your main responsibility after the wedding ceremony is over, will be helping the guests out with anything they might need. For example, guiding them to the bar or the closest washroom etc. Understand that you’ll be the go to person for the wedding guests because you’ll be among the list of people who are most involved in the wedding preparations and aware, so the guests might have questions for you.
