Engagement Party Etiquette: What You Need to Know

Getting engaged is a huge event in the lives of young couples. Once you decide to tie the knot, your attention will quickly turn to celebrating with an engagement party. This is a time when you get the opportunity to entertain friends and family members. However, there are certain unwritten rules you have to follow. When it comes to engagement party etiquette, these are some of the factors you need to consider.

Hosting and Paying for the Party

Hosting and paying for an engagement party is normally the responsibility of the bride-to-be’s parents. However this is not a set rule. If the party is expensive or will take a lot of effort to arrange, it’s not unusual for other family members and friends to lend a hand. In other situations, the couple celebrating their engagement take care of this event themselves. Organizing a venue, providing food and drink, hiring a photographer and a range of other tasks take time and money, so it’s important to plan properly for this.

Don’t over-burden your best man or maid of honor by asking them to help you with this event. In most cases they will probably offer to help. However, they may already have enough on their plate. These people will be dealing with other events in the run-up to your wedding.

Engagement Party Guests Should Be People Invited to the Wedding

Deciding who to invite to your engagement party is one of the most time-consuming and stressful activities of all. It’s easy to forget certain friends or family members during this process. As a rule, only invite people who will be attending your wedding. This prevents a lot of confusion and controversy later.

Most guests need plenty of notice about the details of an engagement party. All of this information should be included in professionally made invitations and sent to each attendee.

Traditional methods of sending invitations are still widely used by couples who have just got engaged. However, social media plays a huge role in many people’s lives. Social media platforms are the perfect places to set up details about an event like an engagement party. This is particularly effective if you communicate with friends and family regularly on social media websites. It can also save on expenses associated with buying and sending a large number of paper-based invitations.

Guests will need at least a month’s notice so that they can make the appropriate preparations and arrangements for your special celebration. It also gives you a better idea about how many of the invited guest will be able to attend.

No Gifts Are Expected

Unlike a wedding, gifts are not expected at an engagement party. However, some people make the extra effort and this has to be dealt with in the appropriate manner. If some attendees give gifts and others don’t, make sure you deal with this in a discrete way to avoid embarrassing guests who don’t bring a gift. Thank the person who gave you a gift and find a safe place to store it, away from public view.

If you’re attending an engagement party and want to give the happy couple a gift, a card and a relatively simple, affordable item is enough. The people attending an engagement party will also be at the wedding, where they will give their main gift.

Engagement Parties Are More Casual than a Wedding

An engagement party is the perfect place for members of both families to meet. It’s also the ideal way to introduce your friends to family members from both sets of families. In this first gathering, you don’t want the party to be too formal. It’s a good idea to ask guests to wear casual or smart-casual clothing, which will encourage a more relaxed party atmosphere. If you’re not certain about this, ask some close friends and family members what’s practical and suitable for everyone involved.

Speeches and Toasts

Normally the main speeches are kept for the wedding day. However, some engagement parties include short speeches from the father of the bride, the groom and the bride. These are usually short speeches thanking people for attending. They often start with the father of the bride giving a toast to the newly engaged couple.

An engagement party is the perfect opportunity to celebrate. This special occasion brings your family and friends closer together before your wedding day. However, understanding many of the unwritten rules for such an event is vital so that everyone enjoys themselves and everything runs as smoothly as possible.
