Per a multitude of Googled and Pinterested fashion guides, most of us have amassed a small collection of “investment pieces”: the perfect white button-downs, LBDs and quilted leather bags that will sustain our respective wardrobes in classy stylishness for all eternity.
But amid all the glamour, many of us miss investing in the most important investment piece of all: our futures.
Before my days as a full-time Sassinista, I was a professional HR rep. Year after year during fall’s open enrollment, I watched as young, fashion-forward millenials like myself balk at choosing benefits.
Most often, the younger the employee, the more likely they were to rush through their benefit decisions, choosing the easiest option that subtracted the least from each paycheck.
I can’t really judge, because before HR life taught me better, I was one of these benefits shoppers. Being able to afford an extra Michael Kors sweater every check made the high deductible plan seem desirable – until a tumble down my apartment stairs in too-high Isabel Marant heels landed me in out-of-pocket hot water I hadn’t anticipated.
In today’s healthcare landscape, voluntary insurance is a key component of health care – especially for us millennials who are often in denial as I was about being diagnosed with a serious illness or a disability. It really happens – even at our age, I promise!
Voluntary insurance policies such as accident, critical illness and hospital help to protect millennials from high out-of-pocket costs that major medical insurance was never designed to cover. And many pay cash benefits that can be used for groceries, lodging or even hospital parking bills. (FYI: apparently a fractured ankle does not guarantee you validation.)
To learn more about your options, visit and find out how you could be throwing out that hard-earned dough every time you make a hasty, uninformed benefits decision. Because being fashion-forward means being forward-thinking.

Good point. I do probably think more about investing in my wardrobe then investing in my life. That's important healthy advice for women.
