Three Tips for Choosing the Right Maternity Bras

Around 300,000 babies are born in Australia every year, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. It means that for every minute and 44 seconds, one baby is birthed out of the mother’s womb in Australia. Additionally, despite the global decline in fertility rate, the country’s average for the number of children per family is still two. It is not surprising that maternal apparel is highly in demand in Australia. Maternity bras in Australia are one of the essential pieces of clothing that a pregnant woman must have. If you are pregnant or lactating, here are three tips to help you have an easy time when shopping for your maternity clothing:

Shop at an appropriate time

Based on a survey, the most popular bra sizes bought at Australian local stores are between 14C and 12 D. Expect that your maternity bra will be bustier than those sizes. Due to hormonal increases, the size of your breasts will significantly be altered during pregnancy. It can even increase up to four cup sizes when you are already lactating. Therefore, many experts have suggested that it is best to wait until you are on your last trimester before shopping for maternity bras. Furthermore, if you plan to look at another set after giving birth, you should buy them four months after your child’s delivery.

Measure appropriately

There is nothing more uncomfortable than a small bra. If your maternity bras in Australia are too tight, you might get plugged ducts. This infection will require you to take up antibiotics, making your childrearing days harder.

To somehow get a more accurate size, Australian experts have also advised that you should measure your bust size during midday when your breasts are at its fullest. It is also a good practice to measure your breasts while standing up. If you do not have a measuring tape, have it professionally fitted at the store.

A comfortably-fitted bra should sit snugly against your body. You should also be able to fit at least two fingers underneath them.

Choose the right design

According to the Australian Breastfeeding Association, bras without underwire are best for those who are lactating. This kind of bra design is well-adjusted to the changing size of your breasts. Having an inflexible underwire will put too much pressure on your chest when your milk ducts are replenished after breastfeeding. If you really want to have an undersupport, get those flexible low-gauge wirings. You can also opt for racerbacks so you can have adequate back support.

It is also suggested by Australian experts to get cotton maternity bras since they are hypoallergenic. Additionally, this material is breathable and durable at the same time. It can accommodate your changing breast size and provide you with the support that you need to still look stylish.

Since Australians are typically concerned about looking good and fit, if you still want to engage in physical activities right after giving birth, you may opt for a two-layer bra design that can accommodate nursing pads and provide snug fitting while exercising.

Breastfeeding is challenging enough; you do not need to suffer more by wearing something that will make you uncomfortable. As such, shopping at an appropriate time, wearing the proper size, and choosing the right design will significantly help you during your maternity days.
