More Tips on Cutting Your Own Bangs

Recently, one reader commented on my post about how to cut your own bangs asking what length she should cut her bangs. Although I can’t say what length will best suit you and your haircut (check out this post for some ideas), here are a few more tips on helping you decide what length will look best:

• Wet hair shrinks. When you’re cutting your bangs, it is always best to cut wet, but remember that they will shrink. The best thing to do is to cut the length a centimeter or two longer to give your bangs a little leeway.
• Don’t pull tight. Bangs usually have a natural bounce, whether it be from your hairline or a cow lick, so let them fall naturally when you’re cutting them. If you pull too tightly, they’ll bounce up once they’re cut and be shorter than you expected.
• In general, it is smart to leave the length a little longer than you want it. This way, you have room for mistakes. Say you want them eye length: start a little below the eye and go from there, making sure that the length isn’t too short.
• If this is your first time experimenting with bangs, it is best to leave them longer. I have known a lot of people who cut them short right away and were not pleased. So keep them long and let yourself adjust to them before going shorter.
