Eye Makeup Review: Almay Intense I-Color Mascara

So I’ve had two colored mascaras run-ins: one pink and horrifying, and one blue and mediocre. Still, you guys know I can’t resist colorful and slightly drag-queeny makeup, so I haven’t given up on my search for a decent-looking one. Almay’s Intense I-Color line holds several options, but I picked the shade in Play Up the Green, for green eyes!

“But Cailin, I thought you had blue eyes!” you’re thinking. “Has it all been a lie?” Yes, my silly readers, I have blue eyes, but I’ll wear anything once, and I’m always attracted to colors made for green eyes for some reason.

I remembered my previous experiences and decided I should try to strike a balance between intensity and wearability. I thought purple was the obvious choice – playful enough to be fun and avant-garde, yet dark enough to not make you look like a Dolce & Gabbana ad. Still, I was too gun-shy to sample the real purple and opted for “Raisin Quartz”, a warm maroon shade somewhere between brown and purple.

As always, the result wasn’t the overflowing fountain of fabulosity I’d hoped for. The color was, again, a little vanilla, and the mascara didn’t lengthen as much as I like. Still, it’s creative enough and encourages girls to play with their makeup.

The verdict: 6/10 – not too shabby for something classified as a colored mascara, which is the makeup equivalent of shoulder pads or the Macarena.

You’ll love it if: You have green eyes; you’ve always wanted a tattoo but you just can’t decide of what
You’ll hate it if: You wear a lot of neutrals and black; you’ve got your makeup routine down to an exact 4 minutes and 53.6 seconds

How To Wear It? Pair this mascara with a mint green eyeshadow all over the lid. Blend a deep warm brown shadow into the crease and up underneath the bottom eyelashes, taking care not to extend the line more than halfway toward the inner corner of your eye. Feeling brave? Accent with some hot pink under the bottom lashes if you’re feeling reeeeally frisky.

Almay Intense I-Color Mascara in Raisin Quartz sells at Amazon.com for $7.28.
