Let’s be frank: most of us are massively out of shape. We need to start making changes in our lifestyles to improve our health. However, that is a lot easier said than done. Many of us lead hectic lifestyles, hold down a job and take care of the family. Thus, finding time to do some much-needed exercise is incredibly difficult. By the time we leave the office late, we are exhausted. All we want to do is to go home, get something to eat and then sit down and enjoy our favourite TV show. We could wake up at 5am to squeeze in some exercise, but that isn’t something many of us are motivated to do. We need to find some answers and we need to find them quick before our health leads to illness. I submit to you that the answer to all of this lies in strength training.

As we all get older, it becomes increasingly important that we start doing resistance exercise. We can work out at home and squeeze in 10 to 15 minutes here and there to make sure that we reach our daily exercise goals. If you’re in the dark as to why it is so important to have more muscle as you grow older, then the following may help educate you a little.

Strength training helps with blood sugar regulation

Doctors are always telling us to eat more fruit and vegetables. However, these particular food items contain quite a lot of carbohydrates and so turn to sugar. Lots of folks also eat lots of convenience foods and fast foods because it is easier to order in then it is to prepare a meal. This is a lifestyle reserved for young people and not for those of us who were getting closer to retirement age. Training with weights can reduce blood sugar levels. By doing these exercises to lose weight, it helps you to burn a lot more fat as well.

More muscle leads to less fat

As we age we tend to carry our weight around our midsections. This is what causes many health issues including stage one and two diabetes. The key is to start burning this visceral fat and one way that you can move along quite quickly is through weight training. You may notice that your weight doesn’t drop considerably, but don’t worry. This is just your increase in muscle which is a very healthy thing to have. If you want to measure the results of your weight exercises then get out your measuring tape and start measuring areas of your body like your waist and your arms to give you a better idea of your progress.

It’s time that you start taking care of yourself for a change. Start doing at least 30 minutes of regular dumbbell exercise five days a week. Even a light pair of cute dumbbells can get you going! No one else is going to make these changes for you so it is going to take a real effort on your part to turn your life around for the better.
