October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and cosmetics companies are stepping up to the call of the pink ribbon with beauty products that donate to breast cancer research and treatment funds. Here are some of the goodies you can grab to beautify your bod and your soul with a donation:
DuWop Pink Shimmer Brick and LipLingo Pink
The limited edition Pink Shimmer Brick ($18) can be dusted over bare skin for a hint of shimmer that brightens and evens skin tone. Liplingo Pink ($32) is a lip palette containing a rose lipstick and 4 different toppings: a subtle gold frost, a pale pink shimmer gloss, a rich pink sparkly sherbet tone and a super shiny, pink-tinged clear balm. 20% of Pink Shimmer Brick’s proceeds go to the Cosmetic Executive Women Cancer and Careers Foundation, and 20% of the proceeds from LipLingo Pink help fund breast cancer research.
philosophy she colors my day and shower for the cure
Shower for the Cure ($20) is Philosophy’s pink ribbon shower gel that doubles as a shampoo or bubble bath. Philosophy is also launching the She Colors My Day high-foaming green bubble bath to celebrate the bond between mothers and daughters. 100% of the net proceeds from both products will be donated to the Women’s Cancer Research Fund, an organization dedicated to developing an early detection biomarker test so that women’s cancers can be detected years before current tests allow.

Okay so just hear me out. I’m really conflicted in hearing about these breast cancer products. They never seem very full-disclosure. Like what percent of the money actually goes to breast cancer research? What does “awareness” mean? Are they actually giving money to things that help people with cancer or is it just a marketing gimmick because they put a woman’s disease on products that are marketed to women??
Are there less “sexy” kinds of cancer that might actually be more harmful to people or where our money could be more effectively spent?
Don’t get me wrong- I fully support helping women (and men) with breast cancer but I feel like the yogurt and the makeup and all of it has just gone too far… just my opinion.
