Celebrity makeup artist Joanna Schlip, whose illustrious client list includes Denise Richards, Ellen Pompeo, Christina Applegate and Laura Linney, shares her top beauty picks for this fall’s trends and how to pull them off:
TREND: A ROMANTIC, FLUSHED FACE
This season it’s all about a matte eggshell finish, contoured cheeks, and subtle shiny elements on the eyes or lips. Blush is back – add a pinch of color to the apple of the cheeks for a super feminine and classic look.
Tip: Try mixing and matching shades to find the perfect palette. Shimmery rose hues are a great touch for color and a taupe or tan contour are perfect for a winter glow. Only use bronzers without shimmer as a contouring tool to emphasize the bone structure – it is more subtle and won’t be obvious.
TREND: WINE COLORED LIPS
Deep wine tones such as burgundy, cabernet and merlot – even scarlet – will be hot this season as a matte base lip stain. A little shimmer with a champagne-colored gloss on top is the perfect overlay for dark, dramatic lips.
Tip: Mix the texture by adding gloss on top of a matte lip color or a bit of sparkly eye shadow on your lips. This creates a new texture and adds a more dramatic look.
TREND: DARK EYES
Eyes should be heavily smudged in shades of slate gray, burgundy, rich browns, cabernet and army green, which are all hot this season. Adding heavy eyeliner and topping it off with black mascara will create an intensity that balances out this fall trend of romantic flushed cheeks.
Tip: Color in your crease. Adding a dark shade up through the crease of your eye will enhance the eyes for a more dramatic look.
