HELP! I Suck at Hair! #hairchallenged

Are you HAIR CHALLENGED? Seriously, do you SUCK at doing your hair?

Help I suck at hair coverYou’re not alone. I even used to be hair-challenged myself. After I became a prominent beauty blogger, I realized that those girls you see running around with long, luscious locks and perfectly styled fishtail braids aren’t born that way (at least not all of them are) – they become that way through practice, tips and tricks I’d never been taught.

Making A Salon Blowout Last

Hairstyle Tips: Making a Salon Blowout LastThe au courant trend in prepping for a night on the town is getting your hair blown out at the salon. If you’ve never had a blowout, let me tell you, the luxurious feeling that ensues of having naturally straight, voluminous hair is a beauty addict’s favorite kind of high.

Alas, all too often do we wake up the following day with lackluster locks and blowout-withdrawal symptoms. So how can we hang on to the dreamy hair of our yesterdays? Here are a few tips for making your salon blowout last:

How To: Cut Your Own Bangs

How to cut your own bangsIf you’re a girl with bangs, you probably find that your fringe doesn’t weather the full 4-6 weeks between trips to the hair salon without falling into your eyes or making your haircut look funny. Not to worry – you can touch your bangs up yourself at home, without the time and expense of traveling to your hairstylist. (Don’t tell her, though.)

I actually took the plunge and cut myself an entire fringe out of my regular even-length hair – really! (Seriously, where would we be in life without Youtube?)

Here are a couple of tips to help tame your bangs until your next haircut by cutting them yourself:

  1. Part off your “fringe” area in a triangle. Make sure that it’s not too thick, or too thin, and that you only part off what is indeed your bangs.
  2. Trim them to the length that you want them. It’s best to only trim about ¼” just to be sure you don’t cut off too much.
  3. Once you’ve trimmed them all the way across, gather up the parted hair and cut it all vertically.
  4. Let your bangs fall naturally and brush them the way you want them. Make sure they look even and clean up any extra long pieces you may have missed.

How To: Choose The Right Haircut

Most of you ladies have probably gotten a haircut that looked beautiful – that day, at least. But we have to live with our hair every day, not just when we’ve come straight from the salon. The key to getting a great, versatile haircut that you can wear up, down or in between is choosing one that works for your hair type. Here’s a simple guide to choosing a cut perfect for your hair type:

Jessica Alba Wavy HaircutIf you have naturally thick, wavy hair:

Choose a haircut that’s blunt across the bottom, then layered evenly throughout. (This amount of layering would look too choppy on fine hair, but it works with your thick locks. You lustrous girl, you.)

For styling: blow-dry with a diffuser attachment, then touch up those face-framing curls using a curling iron with a medium sized barrel (try 1 1/2 inch). You can also create curls all over with the curling iron, then break them up gently with your fingers to create a sexy, disheveled look.

Hairstyle Gripe: Overly Long Emo Bangs

redhead Red hair bangs in faceI have a bit of a complaint about a hairstyle I’m seeing way too much: in the emo (or “scene”, the term the cool kids are using to differentiate themselves even further) tradition, teenagers everywhere have long, pointy bangs dripping down their faces. What’s going on with that? When did every 15 year old decide they were Pete Wentz?

I’m all for the punkish, edgy look, but these choppy, razor-cut bangs (which some new hipsters are referring to as “fringe” – confusing since I thought that meant a collection of thick, layered, straight-cut lash-brushing lovely bangs, not sticky Pokemon styles) have got to stop somewhere; more specifically, somewhere on your forehead.
